Corporate History

Nov 1918 Obtained technology from Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass Co. of the United States to produce flat glass using the Colburn process.
Established as America Japan Sheet Glass Co., Ltd. with its head office in Osaka.
May 1919 Established the Wakamatsu Plant in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture.
Jan 1931 Changed the company name to Nippon Sheet Glass Co., Ltd.
Aug 1935 Established the Yokkaichi Plant in Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture.
Mar 1941 Acquired Tokunaga Sheet Glass Manufacturing Co., Ltd. and added the Amagasaki Plant in Amagasaki, Hyogo Prefecture, to the company's production capacity.
Aug 1941 Established the Tokyo Branch Office.
Nov 1944 Ceased operations at the Amagasaki Plant and transferred the plant to Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd.
Aug 1947 Established the Osaka Branch Office and Kokura Branch Office.
Aug 1948 Established the Nagoya Branch Office.
Nov 1949 Established a research laboratory in Amagasaki.
Mar 1951 Established the Maizuru Plant in Maizuru, Kyoto Prefecture.
Nov 1953 Established the Otaru Branch Office.
Jun 1961 Completed construction of the Head Office building in Osaka.
Apr 1963 Established the Sendai Branch Office.
Sep 1963 Established the Chiba Plant in Ichihara, Chiba Prefecture.
Dec 1963 Relocated the Otaru Branch Office in Sapporo and established the Sapporo Branch Office.
Nov 1964 Installed a new float glass manufacturing process at the Maizuru Plant.
Jul 1968 Transferred the research laboratory to a new site in Itami, Hyogo Prefecture.
Jul 1969 Installed new figured glass manufacturing equipment at the Chiba Plant.
Oct 1970 Acquired Nippon Safety Glass Co., Ltd. and added its Kawasaki Plant in Kawasaki and its Kyoto Plant in Kyoto to the company's production capacity.
Aug 1971 Installed a new float glass manufacturing process at the Chiba Plant.
Nov 1971 Established Malaysian Sheet Glass Berhad.
Aug 1972 Relocated the Kokura Branch Office to Fukuoka and established the Fukuoka Branch Office.
May 1973 Established the Hiroshima Branch Office.
Dec 1977 Closed the Wakamatsu Plant.
Jun 1978 Installed a new float glass manufacturing process at the Maizuru Plant.
Jul 1979 Obtained the sales right of glass fiber products from Nippon Glass Fiber Co., Ltd. and commenced sale of glass fiber.
Dec 1979 Took over the management of the Tsuchiura Plant from Nippon Glass Fiber Co., Ltd and started operation as the Tsuchiura Works.
Jul 1980 Established the Sagamihara Works at Sagamihara, Kanagawa Prefecture.
Oct 1983 Established a new research laboratory at Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture.
Sep 1986 Established United L-N Glass, Inc.
Apr 1987 Established Nippon Micro G-Wool Co. Ltd. (later renamed MAG Co., Ltd.) to undertake the manufacture and sale of glass wool.
Oct 1987 Established NSG Europe N.V./S.A.
Mar 1990 Invested in Libbey-Owens-Ford Co.
Jun 1990 Closed the Kawasaki Plant.
Jul 1990 Renamed the Sagamihara Works the Sagamihara Plant.
Nov 1991 Established the Aichi Plant at Toyota, Aichi Prefecture.
Apr 1993 Invested in Triplex Safety Glass, Ltd.
Mar 1995 Established Vietnam Float Glass Co., Ltd.
Jul 1995 Established NSG Asia Pte. Ltd.
Aug 1995 Established Suzhou NSG Electronics Co., Ltd.
Nov 1996 Established NSG philippines, Inc.
Jan 1997 Established Tianjin NSG Float Glass Co., Ltd.
Feb 1998 Commenced new float furnace operations at the Maizuru Plant.
Apr 1999 Merged with Nippon Glass Fiber Co., Ltd. and Micro Optics Co., Ltd.
Jul 2000 Invested in Pilkington Plc.
Apr 2001 Acquired Nippon Muki Co., Ltd.
Oct 2001 Affiliated with Pilkington Plc. under the equity method.
Sep 2002 Transferred the continuous glass fiber business to Established NSG Vetrotex K.K.
Jan 2004 Sold majority of the shares in Tianjin NSG Float Glass Co., Ltd. to Shanghai Yaohua Pilkington Glass Co., Ltd.
Mar 2004 Sold the glass disk business to Hoya Corp.
Jul 2004 Moved the registered head office from Osaka to Tokyo.(Minato Ward)
Sep 2004 Closed the Aichi Plant.
Oct 2004 Acquired the battery separator business from Nippon Muki Co., Ltd.
and added its Tarui Plant to the company's production capacity.
Dec 2005 Acquired remaining 50% equty of Suzhou NSG AFC Thin Films Electronics Co., Ltd.and made it a subsidiary.
Jun 2006 Acquired remaining 80% equty of Pilkington plc. and made it a subsidiary.
Nov 2006 Commenced the operation of NGF Asia Co.,Ltd.(Established May-2005)
